How to make a dark L sound in AE English?

I know the fact that one would have to lift the back of their tongue towards the roof to make the dark L sound. The real question here is if the tip of the tongue touches the alveolar ridge or the teeth. I have some explain to me that it touches the alveolar ridge, some saids it touches behind the teeth, other said that the tip just stays down, and the remaining would say that the tip curls up but doesn't touches anything. I need help.
