    Default a probe into/on ?

As a probe into charges of a civilian massacre, the Pentagon......

Can you tell me " a probe into " ?

Does it mean " an investigation into " ?

    Can I use another preposition ? like " onto " ?

    Thanks

    Hello Alan

    Yes, that's right: an investigation.

A "probe" is a surgical instrument: you use it to explore wounds, etc. So it always goes with "into", because you put the probe "into" the wound.

(When you visit your dentist, he may also "probe" your teeth with a sharp instrument, to check for decay.)

Ufff, MrP, how a horrible example you gave here ! You scared me so much, so I think I'll brush my teeth now. See you later.
