"There was a time when a man would have wait weeks for a rejection to come by mail"

dialogue from 'Pretty Little Liars'

I listened the bold part of the sentence above many times. I know the transcription: 'when a man would have' - /wen/ /ə/ /mæn/ /wʊd/ /hæv/, but I still don't understand what he says. What can I do to understand the part of the sentence? Maybe the transcription is wrong? Maybe he says shortly and then the transcription is different?

No. In other words I understand what the sentence means but I can't hear it when the words stick together.
