    Default break down or broke?

    people say

    my computer broke down but my computer broke.
    my MP 3 player broke but my MP 3 player broke down.

    when do you say broke or broke down? it is really confusing.

    For mechanical things (cars), I use broke down, but for electronic things, I use broke.
