    any of

    Which is correct:

Do any of you know Maria?
Does any of you know Maria?

Are both acceptable? Is one more formal? Is this a case of Britsh vs American English? I've heard both used by my co-teachers.

    Re: any of

I would use the first. I can only see the second used if thought that the possibility of anyone knowing her was more remote and hoping that maybe one person might know her.

    Re: any of

Does it mean that number of persons who know maria should be more than one in a group.
    Or
    "Do" is referring to "you".

    Re: any of

'Do' agrees in person and number with its subject:

    paradigm
    Do I?
Do you? <Note, *Does you? is ungrammatical>
    Does s/he?
    Does it?
    Does anyone, one?
    Do they?
