Hello teacher,
This is Anna, this is my first time to left a message on the website.I just want to know if we say my favorite animal is dogs...,it seems like something wrong with that. Because we say my favorite animal that means one kind of animals is your favorite. But you use "is",for "my favorite animal" the subject is single. So what is the correct form to say this sentence pattern? Please help me deal with that. I really want to know what is correct.

Thanks for your help

Anna

the use of "the" plus a singular noun is used when we refer to a

group of animals, kind of machine, group of instruments, currency...

1. The dog is man's best friend.

2. I cannot play the guitar.

so i would suggest you use "My favorite animal is the dog."(with a general idea)

Why not say:
Dogs are my favourite animal. ;-)

'my favourite animal is the dog' is correct. If you said 'my favourite animal is a dog' you would be referring to a specific dog, for example: 'my favourite animal is a dog called Rex'.

You could also say 'my favourite animals are dogs'.
