    a period after "U.S."

    I've been always wondering this...
Could you tell me whether you need a period when the sentence ends with words, which is abbriviated using a period, like "U.S." or "Dept."?

    A. I was born in the U.S.
    B. I was born in the U.S..

    A. He belongs to the Clinical Research Dept.
    B. He belongs to the Clinical Research Dept..

    Which is correct?

No, you should not add an extra period. In both your examples, sentence A is correctly punctuated.

    Thank you, rewboss!

How about a comma and a colon?
Is it OK to use them after a period?
    For example,

    - Application No.: 8531561

    - It was the Application No., not the Approval No.
