    Default When to add "-"

The idea of this thread came to my mind as I saw combination of two words:
    royalty free

    the correct one was:
    royalty-free

Why and when adding the "-"? I do not understand this..

You hyphenate adjectives when the two words depend on each other for one meaning, and there is a potential for ambiguity without the hyphen.
