    Smile concise language

I wonder if I can change the following sentneces like this:

1 He gave encouragement to his students to keep jounrals to write in-->>He encouraged his students to keep journals.(is it ok if i get ried of to write in?+

2...but they soon made the discovery that this was a helpful thing to their writing.--> ...but they soon discovered that this was helpful for their writing.
