The antibiotics cleared the infection up. You can clear away the dishes, but you clear up an infection.

Perhaps the saying is clear "up" an infection, but doesn't that technically mean it goes "away." Clear "up" acne, but when it is cleared, it not there anymore. It did not go up the face. The infection did not go up the body, it went out and away. (I never have few words - thus I need to learn more English).

Mostly, I've heard cleared away.. As in : The government cleared away the forests for making a new highway.
