    Hello all

What does the following sentence mean?

He had never believed in (mere utility).

    Thank you all

Mere utility means functionality. You would use the phrase to describe something which is good for its purpose but no effort has been put in to make it look good. So in your example the man was interested in the look or aesthetics of things, not just that they worked.
