    13 seconds back

in a air race, into qualifications:

"he is 13 seconds back". i don't have any other indication.

so does it mean that the pilot is 13 seconds behind the pole position, or 13 seconds ahead or something else?

    thanks already for answers:)

I am not sure about the question. What I thought was:"he is 13 seconds late".

    Look for other's comments.

    Re: 13 seconds back

What comes to my mind first is also the meaning of late exactly behind the other plane or planes and someone(or other pilots have) has left him behind with 13 second ahead of him

    Re: 13 seconds back

I would take "13 seconds back" to mean "behind by 13 seconds".

Likewise - behind the leader by 13 seconds.

That would be interesting, but no. "back" here means behind in time (i.e., in back of the others).
