    I would put a in the blank, but if I had to use one of the choices given I would choose this, as it makes the most sense. However, that is also possible.

    I would put the in the blank, but if I had to use one of the choices given I would use those. However, these is also possible.

    I think this and that are equally valid choices there. (Which word is used depends on context.)

    In these examples it is unclear whether the objects are close or far, so I agree with Ron. They don't really test this\that.
