    Unhappy state vs status

i work with a technical writer and translator who are not native speakers of english.
quite often, i come across technical content with reference to state and status.
They are under the impression that the plural of status is states which is incorrect.
    For example:
Let us say we have a table with the following headings:
    Item Color Status Description
Fan Red and green Green: on the fan tray is in normal state
I think this has to be the fan tray is in normal status.
Can you tell me if this correction is valid?
If so, can you give me some simple examples in making them understand as to when to use state and status.

You need an article or a possessive here. I would say "The fan tray is in a (or its) normal state."

You COULD say "The fan tray is in its normal status", but it sounds odd. Normally, you are 'in' a state, but 'have' a status (or condition). So: "The status of the fan tray is normal", or "The fan tray has its normal status".
