    Unreadable contents?

Hello there. Sometimes when I surfed the internet, due to different languagues, the pages just displayed some sort of "&%$#!!" and some symbolic characters. How do we call the characters? I was once told the proper word but now forgot. Can we call it "unreadable" or "garbage" or something that some techno geeks will call?

    Cheers.

    Re: Unreadable contents?

'Undisplayable characters' is the term I have heard used.

    Re: Unreadable contents?

In the IT world, I frequently heard the expression 'garbage'. When people were on their best behaviour (trying very hard to be correct) they used some explanatory phrase like 'corrupted text'.

    Re: Unreadable contents?

Would it still be corrupted text when the problem was the language, like when Chinese characters appear as those little square boxes?

No; your 'Undisplayable characters' wd be more appropriate here. I meant my 'some explanatory phrase' to include that - sorry if I appeared to be trying to trump it with 'corrupted text'.

OK- I wasn't sure, as neither is a term I use much.
