Default about the usage of "the other"

    Hello,

I would like to know if the use of the phrase "the other " in the follwoing sentence is correct?

" The big moutain and the squirrel are two different things and they can never take the place of the other"

Would it be better if I say ' None of them can take the place of the other" or Neither of them can take the place of each other."
    Which one is more acceptable?

    Many thanks!

That part is fine. It is a different part of the sentence that needs to be changed.

" The big moutain and the squirrel are two different things and they can never take the place of the other"
Better: " The big moutain and the squirrel are two different things, and neither can ever take the place of the other."

Would it be better if I say ' None of them can take the place of the other" or Neither of them can take the place of each other."

The second one. You can't use the first.

You could also say 'one cannot take the place of the other'. :)

It would be better to say, "Neither can take the place of the other."
