    Default slender?

    Hi there,

I got this question in a quizz, but I'm a bit puzzled as to what is incorrect in this exchange:
Is John ill? Hes lost a lot of weight.
Yes, hes rather slender these days, isnt he?

From the Cambridge dictionary, "slender" is defined as "thin and delicate, often in a way that is attractive" so could it be that it's a case of using the wrong word here?

    Thanks for your help

I don't think the sentence is incorrect. It would be more usual to say "thin" or "skinny" than "slender" - but I can imagine somebody saying "slender" in a slightly ironic fashion.

If John really has been ill it would be tasteless joke; but then the English sense of humour can be strange.

You are quite correct. I think "thin" would be better in this context.

Thanks a million, I should really have searched the forum first, as I've just noticed the same question has been asked before...

at least I was glad to see I'm not the first one to find this question rather confusing!
