    Spot on, Humble

Did you know that 'hard day's night' was a play on words (which makes me think that this 'Lennon-McCartney' song, or this bit of it at least, was written by John Lennon). The usual collocation is "a hard day's work" or "a hard day's digging" (any strenuous labour, often physical).

The strenuous work in question, at the time the phrase was first coined, is reputed to have been a long recording session, which lasted late into the night.

I thought the phrase came from Ringo Starr.

    Re: Sleep like a log

And, after sticking my neck out, I thought it was George Harrison who first used the phrase (possibly after a day's filming, rather than recording); but pop trivia isn't really my thing .

I still think it was John rather than Paul, though, who decided to use it in a song. (This is only a guess, and I certainly wouldn't make a big thing of defending the view.)

I'm not a big Beatles fan, so I could well be wrong about the source. I think it was John who wanted it in the song too.

No, I think Ringo devised the phrase" Eight days a week"
But a hard day night is a very common in english, right?
