    Hello,

What does the term 'howdy' mean and is it only used in certain dialects?

    Thanks

    Howdy, joelle!

To my best knowledge, it is commonly used in AmE and is another way to say hello. I think "howdy" comes from "How'd you do".

Native speakers will certainly tell more.

    Re: Howdy

"Howdy" is an informal greeting, a way of saying "hello". As retro mentioned, it is a contraction of "how do you do." Cowboys in old Western films used to say "howdy" quite often, but today the word is used primarily by people from the American South.
