    Hi, David,
It's just a piece of cake. when you contract is or has, you need the apostrophe:
    David's come = has come.
    David's here = is here.
The weather is fine. It's fine.
The vase has been broken. It's been broken.

When it is a pronoun, no apostrophe:
    The dog wagged its tail.
The sentence is long, I can't understand its structute.

    Hope it helps.

    Humble is correct.

"It's" simply means "it is" or "it has". For example:

    It's very cold today.
    It's rained today.

"Its" is a possessive pronoun. For example:

    The dog licked its fur.
The cat cared for its kittens.

Yes - as Humble says, it's a piece of cake (when you think about it). But I find I have to think about it quite often. My favourite memory-aid is that the possessive "its" deserves an apostrophe no more than "his".
