    OK, this one is driving me nuts. What is it called when you use a phrase such as "hold fast"? Overkill comes to mind, lol.

    Well, never mind on this one. A friend and I have been quizzing each other on things such as what is a contranym and I misunderstood his quiz. Thank you for your time though!!

    You may be thinking of tautology, redundancy, or pleonasm.

    I don't think any of them apply to that example, however.

    You may also be thinking of oxymoron, which it can be, depending on how many definitions of "fast" you know.
