A friend in need is a friend indeed. ?

A friend in need is a friend indeed. Could you explain it in simple English?

If you are "in need", it means that you need something -- help, money, advice, a shoulder to cry on, whatever.

A friend who remains your friend even when you are in need is a true friend. A friend who suddenly disappears when you are in need is not a true friend.
