Day 1: We received the security badges that allowed SFC Coleman and me (SFC Gabriel) access to the APG (Aberdeen Proving Ground) installation secure areas for the exhibition. The in-brief on the procedures or rules of engagement proceeded next, of what we can say, ask, or do during the demonstration of the different companies propose new training device equipment for the Army. The demonstration consisted of a gunnery evaluation and installation procedures of the proposed new training device. The major problem that was brought up during the in-brief was the 2800 meter shot of HE (M792 HEI‑T or M793) our current gunnery manual FM 3-22.1 states - Tracer burn range at 2000m and Max effective range 3000m / 1600m. The M792 HEI‑T projectile can detonate in three ways: direct impact, grazing impact, and self‑destruction.
BAE Team: Only demonstrated one training device system, which fitted on the M1 Abrams Tank. It took approximately 48 minutes with a team consisting of 4 civilians and 2 military Tank SME’s to put the system in-operation, which the system was, still some major flaws. 1-missing the Hull Detector Transmitter (HDT) cable, 2- M2 50 cal. Transmitter cable was too short to connect to the main console, 3- Small arms Transmitter (SAT) visual presentation was missing the location of the SAT installation within the system. The main console for the system stated (main gun, coax, missile), but the M1 Abrams does not have the missile as weapon.
a) Issue: The software for the AAR was not showing any capabilities of transferring training data in a format that the crews can see real-time training. System used for the demonstration of the AAR process was not the system the company adding or giving along with training device packet.
LOCKHEED MARTIN (LM) Team: Demonstrated two variations of their training devices one for the M1 Abrams and M2A2 ODS with upgradeable possibilities. The enhancements of 25mm engagements that were shown: 1 – killing capabilities of the weapon system at max range / tracer burnout (1400m- 2800m), 2- wireless detector belts, which reduce the use cables, 3- engaging moving targets while applying the gap or far lead at targets and still getting positive results (4 out of 5 kills). The AAR process seems some what positive, but the downfall was the need for a specific laptop or desktop computer that supports the graphic requirements.
a) Issue: Major issues that they will need to fix are: while firing the tow missile in the wet fire it kills the BFV, there is reload position every weapon system, except for the tow (tow reload position not used or included), the alignment process of the tow could not be accomplished IAW FM 3-22.1 our gunnery manuals. The Combat Vehicle Kill Indicator (CVKI) is magnetic mounted (easily detached able) and seeing that in some cases soldiers hold on to CVKI as part of their three points of contact while maneuvering around the top of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle possible injuries will occur. Bit test stayed on the whole entire time signifying that some was wrong, but could not identify it or narrow down the problem.
