    another question tag

    Hi Teachers

Linguistics needn`t be taught to elementary students.

    1. Is this sentence correct ?
    2. What is the question tag for this sentence ? Is it "need it ? or "does it?"
When am I supposed to use the auxiliary "do" in relation to the verb "need"?

    Thank you very much.

    Re: another question tag

I suspect UK and US answers will differ here. I'd accept (and possibly prefer) 'need it'; but I've certainly heard 'does it'. The response, refuting the tag, though, would be 'Yes it does'.

AmE speakers would be more likely to say "doesn't need" rather than "needn't", so we would most commonly follow with "does it". Nevertheless, If I were to use "needn't", I would follow with "need" it".
