    If I were the Prime Minister of India is OK. But I am not sure abt the article, though...

    It can be correct with or without the article.

    If I were the prime minister of India...
    If I were Prime Minister of India...

    Hi Monalisa ,
    I think you would like to know more about using "were" with the pronoun "I" instead of "was".
    The subjunctive mood of the verb to be is be in the present tense and were in the past tense, regardless of what the subject is.
    Incorrect: If I was you, I would swim
    Correct: If I were you, I would swim

    There is some disagreement about that, but I would say it is incorrect. If any phrase ever called for the subjunctive, it is that one.

    I mean incorrect in formal English the English we study at school .
    You may hear or read sentence like that in colloquial or informal English .
