Q: What is the term used to describe something that appeals to the senses i.e. sight, smell?

    a stimulus, plural: stimuli

e.g.: The odor (smell) of a substance or a flower can stimulate the olfactory organ (the nose).

(to) stimulate = (to) make a thing perceptible to one of our senses, to function as a physiological stimulus

There are many such words alluring, captivating, pleasant, ambrosial, appealing, attractive, delightful, etc.

When you have a question like this one, a thesaurus can be very useful.

Go to www.dictionary.com, enter "pleasant" in the box, click on thesaurus, and then click on "look it up". The tesaurus will return you lists of words that are synonyms with many of the definitions of pleasant. Go through each category that uses "pleasant" in the way you are using it. It will give you many possibilities.

    Hi Danielys,

Your answer was pretty good, but a stimulus can be anything that affects the senses; it does not have to be something that is appealing. For example, tear gas is a powerful stimulus. :)
