    Default closer eats

    Good day, all teachers!

What does "closer" mean here? It beats the heck out of me! Below shows this word used in the context with food/eats:

"Due to shrinking personal income, most consumers nowadays are trading down to cheaper, closer eats. Frozen and refrigerated meal solutions have a unique opportunity as consumers also are opting not to go out at all."

I'll be very thankful for your explanation on this.

It means they are not travelling so far to go out and eat, thus saving money in both the cost of the meal and travelling.

'Eats' here means eating places, I think.

In AmE, "eats" is a slang word that can mean either a restaurant (usually a cheap, greasy spoon type of diner) or food itself.

"I'm starving, let's go grab some eats."
"I like visiting Joe's mom, she's always got some good eats around the house."
