up one street and down another

They set off at a jog up one street and down another.
Does "up" and "down" suggest that they go along the two streets in different/opposite directions? Or "up" and "down" are equivalent here, and the speaker use them just to avoid repeated using of single "up" or "down"?

The phrase "up one street and down another" suggests to me that they went in opposite directions--one direction one time and the other direction later.

    :)

Ron is correct. I would add that the phrase usually means an extensive search and there are likely more than just two streets involved.
