Default What is the meaning of "verticals"?

    Hi,

what is the meaning of "verticals"? This is seen in terms like
"engineering verticals" or "marketing verticals". For example,
see this sentence from a website:
"Through the GDCs, Geometric promises clients functional architects who have in depth expertise in design, analysis and manufacturing in automotive, aerospace and other verticals."
I don't remember seeing this before and only saw it after words like
"globalization," "outsourcing," and "offshoring" came into use in the
    recent years.

    Thanks

It is just a guess, but it may be referring to vertically-integrated companies, those who are involed in all stages of production and sales of products.

True, the term verticals is used here in a business context which involoves different levels in an organisation or different stages in a process. The combination of two or more companies under the same control for their mutual benefit. In vertical integration a company obtains control of its suppliers which is sometimes called backward or forward integration.

    Reasons:
    1. Reducing competition
    2. Saving cost by reducing overheads
    3. Capturing a larger market share
    4. Pooling resources
    5. Cooperating on R&D
    6. Enhancing competitive advantage
