    hit it out of the park

    Hiya, all the teachers!

    Would you please explain the meaning of the above phrase? The following is an example of the use of this phrase:

    "I have never been a huge Clint Eastwood fan, but he has hit it out of the park in this movie...."

    Your help is greatly appreciated.

    "Hit it out of the park" is a metaphor based on a home run in baseball. It means it was a great success.

    Sports-related metaphors are very common - esp. in AmE. Only yesterday I heard an English cricket commentator saying 'England are behind the 8 ball' (perhaps oblivious to the fact that the metaphor is taken from the game of pool - meaning 'in a very bad position, perhaps inextricably bad').
