'AA' is not a phrase I've met, but it sounds like something I may have a note of in my PGCE file. If you teach a concept, you need to use activities to check whether your teaching has succeeded, and also to reinforce the knowledge that your students have acquired. And before you teach, you need to check how much the concept is already understood - your students may not have the explicit knowledge mentioned in your Lesson Plan, but they may have appropriate/useful conceptual knowledge. Any activity you use to check or develop this could be called an 'AA'. And if you can rely on that awareness, you can happily send them off on their own to apply it (learner independence).

If learners do activities that raise their awareness, they become conscious of what they know and what the need to know, which means that they can become more autonmous in the learning, making informed choices about their studying, and less dependent on the teacher.
