Smile a half an hour - determiners

    hi,

    1. I have known that before the consonant H we have to use an and not a.
    For instance: an hour etc

    But why a half?????????

    2. I have known that before a vowel we have to use an and not a.

For instance: an idiot, an imagination etc

But why a uniform, a unit???????

    m

Whether to use "a" or "an" before a word is determined how the first letter of it is said.

In "hour" 'h' is not pronouned and begins with the sound 'ou' so "an" must be used.

In 'half' 'h' is pronounced, thus it begins with the sound 'h', that's why we should use 'a'.

'Uniform' is pronounced 'yüniform' and it must be preceded by 'a'. Same applies to 'unit'.
