    His modesty prevents him ..... about his great achievements.

    A) to be speaking

    B) to have spoken

    C) from speaking

    D) spoken

    E) speaking

    would you please be so kind as to explain the difference between C and E? Thanks in advance..

    Nothing much. If you look here, you'll see that the British omit the preposition more than American speakers, but it doesn't change the meaning to me: http://www.usingenglish.com/poll/402.html

    Does it also go for "He is prevented by law (from) holding a license"?
