    Default snatch ropes

    Hi there,
I'm wondering if someone could explain to me the meaning of "snatch ropes". I've heard it in Shakira's son "Hips don't lie". It says "Colombians and Haitians I ain't guilty, it's a musical transaction No more do we snatch ropes Refugees run the seas 'cause we own our own boats I'm on ... "

    Thanks

I think 'snatch ropes' refers to the blocks and tackles (cranes and other lifting equipment) that would have been used to unload ships. The people who operated them would be made to work hard and be low paid. So the job would be given to immigrant labourers. However those 'refugees' have now prosperred and own their own boats, therefore they don't do the menial tasks anymore.

I'm not sure what exactly is mean by "snatch ropes;" Mudgy's explanation makes sense, though.

The first thing that came to my mind was the influx of Haitian refugees trying to get to the US, floating on rafts and inner tubes, grabbing at ropes handed down to them from large ships so they could be pulled aboard. I don't know if that's even close to the songwriter's meaning, though.
