    Thumbs up put-off

    What does "put-off" mean in the following: citizens spitting on the roadside and throwing garbage on the streets are a a big put-off.

    Discouragement - 'a put-off' (noun) is an informal back-formation from the phrasal verb 'to put off' [= discourage].
