    Default letter writing question

Is it ever appropriate to place a subject line or re: at the top of a formal letter as a short way to let the receiver know what the letter is about? If so, how and where exactly should this information be placed?

No. A formal business letter should clearly state the purpose of the letter in its first paragraph.
