They were packed three deep at the bar.

I don't understand the underlined sentence. Please help me!
    ---------------------------------------------
    Question 1 . (P 176 in the Pelican Brief)
The rowdies were out by the thousands, parking everywhere, blocking streets, roaming in noisy mobs, drinking from go cups, crowding bars, just having a delightful time raising hell and enjoying themselves.
    ---------------------------------------------
    Question 2 (P 176 and 182 in the Pelican Brief )
Alice parked on Poydras, far away from where she wanted to park, and was an hour late when she arrived at the crowded oyster bar on St. Peter, deep in the Quarter. There were no tables. They were packed three deep at the bar. She retreated to a corner with a cigarette machine and surveyed the people.
    -------------
The weaved through the uprising and found safety in the back near the bar. They were three deep, shoulder to shoulder, and no one moved.
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    I'd appreciate your kind help.

Re: They were packed three deep at the bar.

Never heard of go-cups, but from the context I'd guess that they were drinks containers designed to be drunk from while walking.

    Three deep at the bar:

    .......................................The bar
    ...............................________________________
    ...............................x-O-xx-O-xx-O-xx-O-xx-O-x
    ...............................x-O-xx-O-xx-O-xx-O-xx-O-x
    ...............................x-O-xx-O-xx-O-xx-O-xx-O-x

Hi, Bob, would you shed more light on this drawing? I'm intrigued.

Re: They were packed three deep at the bar.

The bar is where they serve drinks.
(There may be a cultural problem here: in most bars in the UK members of the public have to buy drinks at the bar and carry them to their tables.)

x-O-x represents a person, seen from above.

Re: They were packed three deep at the bar.

You can head out the door with an open container of alcohol-- but not in a bottle or can; to try to keep broken glass and jagged metal from filling the street, local laws mandate you use a plastic cup while on city streets and sidewalks. These are known locally as "go cups", and every local bar provides them, usually has a stack of them by the door and the bouncer will take your drink from you and pour it into the cup because bars can be held liable if they don't. Use them, because New Orleans Police are not fun to deal with.
