    gave / has given

I know her dog gave / has given birth to four puppies recently.

I don't think 'gave' is the correct verb. Am I correct?

    Re: gave / has given

Some people say that we use the present perfect with 'recently', but this is incorrect- we use the past and the present perfect, though with the negative the present perfect is more common. I would say both forms could be used there and without more context, the past sounds more natural to me.

    Re: gave / has given

I thought The Past Simple with recently was a feature of American/Irish English.

No, it's common enough in BrE too.
