    Default interest

    The context is that two parties are involved in this agreement, in which there are a few places where “interest” is used. To many Asian students, meaning of “interest” is hard to pinpoint, as it is usually translated into two, that is, 1.feeling that makes you to pay attention to something, such as interest in music, 2.vested interest, such as interest in the company. But I find these are the two extremes. It could mean something in between (a continuum). The following sentences contain INTEREST. Could you identify them in terms of their actual meaning? To make your work easier, I numbered them.

    to enhance opportunities to collaborate in solving problems of common interest1 relating to agriculture; (It’s a problem, so it cannot be “interest”, as we say “interest in music”, right?)

    Specific areas of cooperation may include, but are not limited to, such areas of mutual interest2 as;

    To generate broad interest3 and increased activities, the Parties shall, by mutual agreement, involve other interested 4 government agencies, scientific and business communities, and private sectors of both countries in cooperative programs and exchanges in implementation of thisProtocol.

    Mutual interest and common interest mean that it is of interest to all alike.Problems of common interest = problems which affect all alike
    Areas of mutual interest=areas which have an influence on/involve all,
    he's interested in=he wants to know more about something
    If it's mutual, more than one person want to know more about the same thing.
    That's something to start with-I don't know if it's of any help.
