    Default dear diary

1.Why Americans use Dear diary at the beginning when they write diaries.
    For example:

    Dear diary:

    Today was a lucky day.

    2.How to explain that?

    Thank you

Because they are writing a diary, not a letter to someone.

People who keep a diary usually develop a strong affection towards it and write as if to speak to it.

Do you keep a diary? If yes, do you speak to your diary?
