Default What is the correct prononciation of 'Drawing'?

    Please help!!

I am surrounded by West-Yorkshire folk whose accents I find very trying at the best of times. However, there are two things that really make the hairs on my neck stand on end - and I would like very much not to be wrong here :D

    a) What is the correct prononciation of 'Drawing'? I hate hearing "Draow-ing" as in "ow that hurt." I don't dr-ow something so why should i be drowing it?

    b) Only in west-yorkshire is Scone (pronouced Sc-oh-ne) considered to be the common prononciation. I was always under the impression that Scon was the common way? I can't imagine QE2 saying "Phillip would you pass me a Scon?"

Please, my English language enlightened fellows, tell me I am not wrong....

    A) there are various pronunciations- many slip /r/ in to connect, though others dislike this.
    B) I was under the impression that 'scon' was the posh version.

Also, that pronunciation is necessary for this joke to work:

Q: What's the fastest cake in the world?
    A: ...
    Q: Too late, scone.

    b

We pronounce it either with a /]:/ (Cardinal vowel #6) or /Z/ (Cardinal vowel #13) in the 1st syllable of "drawing". The LPD lists the American pronunciation which is close to my 1st one.

We pronounce "scone" with either a /Z/ (Cardinal vowel #13) or a diphthong /c/ ( the long "o"). I consider this as a silent e syllable; the e is not uttered. The LPD gives 2 pronunciations which are very similar to our Canadian ones.
