Default Hurt, Ache, Pain or Sore?

    Hi there!

I know how to use "hurt, pain, sore and ache" but I have been unable to explain the difference to my students or the rule... Could you help me ?

    Thanks for your attention.

Default Re: Hurt, Ache, Pain or Sore?

I would explain that hurt is normally used as a verb, pain is normally used as a noun, ache is used as both, and sore is normally used as an adjective. (there are other uses - hurt as a noun, pain as a verb, etc - but this is getting more advanced).

    Then give some examples:

    My stomach hurts
I have a pain in my stomach
    My stomach is sore
    My stomach aches
    I have a stomachache.

    Hope this helps.
