    pathetic also = inspiring scornful pity

    What does `inspiring scornful pity' mean?
    I can't understand it though I know every single word meaning.

    Please explain it.

    that person/act merits some form of pity yet at the same time, also deserving of some show of contempt

    right. say, you have a friend who has gambled away all his savings on the stock market and now pleads for help from you. Being a kind person, you do pity him in his sorry state but yet you might also feel somewhere along the line "serve him right" for being so greedy to think that he can grab riches without hard work. This person is 'inspiring scornful pity' from you. Hope this helps...
