    would have died

The local peasants gave the soldiers clothes and food without which they would have died of cold and hunger.

Is "would have died without them" the past perfect tense or present perfect tense?

    Thanks in advance.

Is "would have died" the present or past perfect tense? If neither, what should it be called?

    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks, Anglika, for the website.

So, I should say it the Past Conditional? If not, how do I describe it?

Thanks again and my apologies for asking the same question again.

    Right. It's a type 3 conditional, a past conditional:

If the local peasants hadn't (have) given the soldiers clothes and food, they would have died of cold and hunger.

    All the best.
