    Default Apostrophe

I asked a similar question before but am still not clear. Please help and tell me whether #1 or #2 is the correct sentence. Thank you. (BTW, Peter and John are friends and 50-50 partners in the project.)

    1. We will inspect Peter and Johnís construction project this afternoon.

    2. We will inspect Peterís and Johnís construction project this afternoon.

Because Peter and John are jointly behind this project, they can be regarded as a single unit, so "Peter and John's" would be fine.

    Note:

Peter's and John's would imply that they each had a project, therefore:

Peter's and John's projects (two or more projects, separate authors on each),

Peter and John's project (one project, two authors), or

    Peter and John's projects
(two or more projects, two authors on each project).

    Peter's and John's project
    sounds awkward.
