    correct word

The most important rule is that they should / may bring some warm and waterproof clothes as suggested, and wear a life jacket when sailing.

Which verb in bold should be used? Are there any errors in the sentence?

    Thanks in advance.

Kohyoongliat, it would help if you could give your threads different names. For example,

    correct word, should or may
    correct word, families or homes

My apologies. I would do so in future.

You don't really need to apologize, only if you feel guilty. We are here to learn and make mistakes, and not to apologize

I disagree. If you do something which the moderator advises against, you should apologise. That's part of learning. Always thank the member or moderator who gives you the correct answers. Be ready to say 'thanks' and sorry'.

    Re: correct word

    Hi,
If it's a rule, then i wouldn't use either should OR may.

The most important rule is that they bring some warm and waterproof clothes as suggested, and wear a life jacket when sailing.

    Or

The most important rule is to bring some warm and waterproof clothes as suggested, and wear a life jacket when sailing.

I also question the use of "suggested" -- perhaps use "instructed"?

I'll agree. Rule sounds odd. (It's not really a rule.)

    What about?

It's important to bring warm clothes that are waterproof and to wear a life jacket when sailing.

    All the best.

Caved, when I mentioned "rule" I was referring to kohyoongliat's example sentence. This sentence,

Ex: The most important rule is that they should/may bring...

The word "rule" isn't necessary in that context. The reason being, if you are going sailing, it is important to wear warm clothes (or clothing), but it is not a rule, a regulation, like, wearing a lift jacket.

Please note that, it was kind of you to help kohloongliat with the pragmatics of English, and you are right; an apology in that situation wasn't required, nor was it necessary. It was, however, polite.

    All the best.
