    Use of percentages in sentences

    Hi there

what is the correct usage in this sentence? (I know that your are not supposed to start a sentence with a numeric figure)

65% of the players was or were happy to receive a jersey. What is the subject - is it 65% or players?

    Thanks for your help.

    Cheers

    John
