Default the call of an ideal

    From joseph Conrad's The Tale

Although I'm having no problems understanding the concept expressed by the call of an ideal, I am having difficulties translating it properly to Swedish (yes, my native language). What would be the closest synonym to the call? Or, a good rephrasing of the call of an ideal? (Hm, is rephrasing even a word?)

‘Yes. I too. Everything should be open in love and war. Open as the day, since both are the call of an ideal which it is so easy, so terribly easy, to degrade in the name of Victory.’

Default Re: the call of an ideal

Both war and love are ideals (!) = maybe "appeal of" would express the underlying meaning of "the call of an ideal" in this context?
