    over-all pattern

The Inspector had smiled after he was finished and patted Margie's head. He said to her mother, "It's not the little girl's fault, Mrs. Jones. I think the geography sector was geared a little too quick. Those things happen sometimes. I've slowed it up to an average ten-year level. Actually, the over-all pattern of her progress is quite satisfactory."

Please explain the meaning of highlighted words in this context.

    Re: over-all pattern

The mechanical teacher's section on geography was set too high for the level of learning that Margie is at.

"over-all pattern" - in general Margie is at the level she should be at in her education.

Could anyone provide some examples with word `geared' as above?

    Re: over-all pattern

I would choose "overall" instead of over-all.

Actually, this is the first time I see it written like this.

Parents gear their childrens development in the right direction. (adjust, monitor)

    Re: over-all pattern

    Thank you Bianca.

But in your sentence, the word `geared' means `preapred' something. I know this meaning.

I want examples with word `geared' as used in my original post/text. #1

    Re: over-all pattern

This class is geared far too much toward students who already have a very strong background in Chemistry.

'gear' in your example has the meaning of adjust, just like here and in my previous example.
