    Default lit up

Margie went into the schoolroom. It was right next to her bedroom, and the mechanical teacher was on and waiting for her. It was always on at the same time every day except Saturday and Sunday, because her mother said little girls learned better if they learned at regular hours.
The screen was lit up, and it said: "Today's arithmetic lesson is on the addition of proper fractions. Please insert yesterday's homework in the proper slot."

Please explain the meaning of `lit up' in this paragraph?

It may be well that when the monitor was operated, there was the notice :"Today's arithmetic lesson is on the addition of proper fractions. Please insert yesterday's homework in the proper slot." on the screen.

Is this Earth is Room Enough by ISAAS ASIMOV?

Btw. It means that the screen was turned on.

No - it is "The Fun They Had Then" - Gary has been working on it for a while.

"The Fun They Had" is taken from Earth is Room Enough.
